PLWG Network: Kim, please tell us a little about yourself.

Kim Taylor: I am an amazing woman full of energy, hope, love, and nurturing sunshine! I enjoy going barefoot and  bonding with the earth, scarves and earrings are my favorite accessories, and dreaming is my favorite pastime.  I’m newly married to a wonderful man by the name of Charlie, and  I have 3 beautiful and amazing children. Kayla is my oldest and dearest daughter(25). I call her my little butterfly. Derrick and Eric are my twin young men(23). I am grateful and very proud of all three.  My favorite color is yellow, the sunflower is my favorite flower, and I enjoy the great outdoors, especially during the fall season.  Kim Waters, my favorite jazz musician, plays regularly on my Pandora along with other popular jazz artists.  I have a special and personal relationship with God my creator, and ice cream and cakes are my kryptonite. I’m also a proud veteran of the United States Air Force.

Kim Taylor: The Professional Leaders of Women and Girls Network (PLWG) is an online network of like-minded Leaders. These Leaders of women and girl businesses, organizations, and  programs work together to support each other, exchange ideas with one another, share information, and cheer each other on. Most businesses have headquarters or corporate offices that direct, guide, and financially supports those businesses.  The Leaders who are members of the PLWG network are their own corporate office/headquarters with their very own team of workers and volunteers. But a Leader needs at least one connection to others on the same level AND at least one other who understand issues and situations common to their particular position. Well, the PLWG strives to provide that connection.PLWG Leaders at work

PLWG Network: Please share with us the inspiration behind The Professional Leaders of Women and Girls.

Kim Taylor: Afro Puffs and Ponytails, a website for African American/Black Girls was my first vision. I created it to serve as a positive, online place for black girls to visit and embrace as their own space full of positive words, encouraging stories, and inspirational pictures of self-love and confidence. But as time passed, people from places other than Georgia began emailing  me seeking information for positive programs for girls in their area. I began receiving requests from schools and social service agencies needing help with finding mentors and programs for black girls.  I started listing women owned and operated, grass root girl serving programs. Programs like the Boys and Girls club, Girls Inc., and Girls Scouts are well established and let’s not forget well funded. Those programs, in my humble opinion, are more than capable of marketing and promoting their services. However, Leaders of programs that I began promoting on Afro Puffs and Ponytails were running their programs from small and limited funds and they are putting those funds and all of their time into the  girls and services they are providing. Naturally, I want to promote those programs. At the same time, I began working with girls and maintaining Afro Puffs and Ponytails quickly Dr. Gail PLWGgrowing website which had become very popular. Shortly thereafter, Leaders of new programs began asking to have their organizations added to Afro Puffs and Ponytails AND asking for suggestions and tips regarding the things they were doing with girls. It didn’t take me long to realize that the numerous questions that were being asked were FREQUENTLY asked questions.  I felt like a broken record saying the same things over and over again BUT to different people. With the encouragement of some of the Leaders I had become close friends with, the PLWG was born.  It was to serve as an online network with answers to frequently asked questions and a space for Leaders to connect with other Leaders.

kim at conferencePLWG Network: What are your goals for the Professional Leaders of Women and Girls Network?

Kim Taylor:  We held our first Leaders Enrichment Conference in Atlanta, Georgia in the fall of 2011 and other training classes and workshops have been in Georgia and online. I would like to continuing having at least one annual Leaders’ Enrichment Conference a year where leaders come together in other states. One of my goals for next year is to provide small grants to assist new programs and organizations that work with women and girls and to host an event where Leaders and their girls all come together for friendly competition and fun activities.

PLWG: What advice do you have for young African American/Black Girls?

Kim Taylor: Know yourself. Know your strengths and use them wisely. Know your weaknesses and work towards strengthening yourself in those areas. Fall deeply in love with yourself and do more things that make you a better, happier, living example of God’s beautiful creations.
